Why Kudu
The greater kudu, scientifically called Tragelaphus strepsiceros, is widely acknowledged as an iconic and aesthetically pleasing antelope species indigenous to Southern Africa. The nomenclature “kudu” originates from the region’s native Khoikhoi language. The taxonomic nomenclature is of Greek origin, where “Tragos” denotes a he-goat, “elaphos” signifies a deer, “Strephis” conveys ‘twisting’, and “Keras” represents ‘horn’.
Despite their substantial physique, these antelopes exhibit an elegant build and are distinguished by their extraordinary leaping proficiency, effortlessly surmounting fences and other obstacles. The horns of a mature bull kudu possess two and a half twists, with a potential straightened length of up to 180cm. Male kudus are notably non-aggressive and are characterised by their tranquil demeanour.
These majestic creatures demonstrate exceptional agility, effortlessly ascending to heights of up to two meters, and have been observed leaping to heights of three and a half meters when confronted with stress. The male kudu’s horns are remarkable, featuring splendid spiral horns that are the lengthiest among all antelope species.
